A
post-compilation field verification is carried out to verify softcopy
photogrammetry map compilation and to identify and classify features which
cannot be classified from the aerial photography.
Please
note that the Field Verification procedures are currently being updated.
Digital
map compilation data and index for area to be field checked
Load
digital map data onto notebook computer.
Prepare
field indexes on 1:50,000 map sheets (NTS series)
·
Circle or underline any detail, on 1:50,000 map
sheet, you have to field check (eg. Cemetery, Post Office, Police, Senior
Citizens Home, Towers, Etc)
·
Plot most efficient route to travel for field edit -
in pencil (guideline only)
·
Road map or maps of area
·
1:50000 field index
·
Styrofoam map board
·
Amber safety light (for roof of car/truck)
·
First Aid Kit
·
Nova Scotia 1:10,000 topographic database feature
code listing
A
Courteous Attitude must be constantly exercised. A concise, non-technical,
explanation of the work involved should be given to individuals on whose
property work is being performed, from whom specific information is sought or
from anyone requesting information on what you are doing.
·
A two person crew go to the project area and drive
all of the possible road networks
·
Collect copies of all available maps, charts, and
plans which may be useful in the mapping of the area (eg. park plans, mine
plans, etc) City and town plans showing street names should be acquired when
available.
·
Plan an area so that it can be covered in an orderly
manner. All roads must be covered/travelled, so plan your routes to be the most
economical and efficient. You must be thoroughly familiar with the compilation
specifications.
Mark/Label
in the digital Field Verification database Arenas, Churches, Community Centres,
Factories, Fire Stations, Forts, Greenhouses, Hospitals, Legislature Buildings,
Libraries, Museums, Police Stations, Post Offices, Pumping Stations, Schools,
Senior Citizens Homes, and Town Halls. Identify all features applying to one
and the same building (eg. Police Station, Fire Station and Town Hall in the
same building)
Revision
mapping requires you to note change of use for buildings.
L.abel/Mark

Construction Area.
Boundaries
should be marked in the digital Field Verification database if it would help
the plotter operator identify the limits of the feature. (eg. Cemeteries,
Parks, Salvage Yard, etc)
Indicate
in the Field Verification "P or UP" for features that require paved
or unpaved attribute. If you prefer attribute 01, 02 after the feature code
Label
Nurseries, Orchards and Reforested Areas in the Field Verification database.
Through
routes in towns and cities will be shown. Dual highways should be marked as to
the number of lanes and whether they have a median. Highway numbers should be
recorded.

The
built-up area must cover a minimum of 10 adjoining blocks that are at least 60%
occupied. Do not include industrial parks and green spaces in built-up areas.
Do not include strip developments in built-up areas.
Use
the colour coded highway classification maps to identity whether the roads are
arterial, collector, local or resource access. Abandoned highways may have to
be identified in the Field Verification database.
Falls
and rapids with place names shown on the NTS series will be marked in the Field
Verification database.
